THE AUSTRALIS

   On October 9 1965 The America left New York on her last round-trip crossing. On her return to New York she was sold to Chandris Lines, a Greek shipping company. She was renamed Australis, and sailed to Greece and was rebuilt. The ship's capacity was increased from 1,046 to 2,258. The original class distinction was changed to all tourist class. She was given air conditioning, and a large outdoor pool was fitted on the aft deck. In here new life she sailed between Europe and Australia. After a decade of making the Down Under run she was retired again in 1978 and laid up, at anchorage at Timuru New Zealand where this picture was taken. Picture from Doug Griffiths who sailed   on the Australis. The picture was taken in March 1978
