Larry,
It was third time lucky for me. I first went
to the island in September 1998, it was on this trip that I heard about the
wreck but my girlfriend at the time and the couple we had gone on the holiday
with were not to interested, so even though we had hired a car during our stay
Garcey remained off limits!
My next visit, in January 2000 was only for
one week but with my girlfriend of the time, we did try to find the wreck but
were put off venturing down the track by the signs we first came
across, having driven up from the La Pared direction.
I tried to find out more about the history of
the ship via the internet on my return from this trip, just in case I got
another chance to find her in the future.
A few things happened in the intervening
years, got made redundant, moved from Wales to London for a new job working on
the railway, changed jobs again (on my terms this time!) and married my
Girlfriend since 2001.
Eventually we found the time and money to
have a well earned break! The Canaries were the favored destination by my Wife
and I, fortunately Fuerteventura offered the best deal and I then made a
promise to myself I would find the "American Star".
Not having seen or heard of the "American
Star" before my first visit to the island, it is hard to describe why the
wreck seems to attract me like a magnet. It may be because of my engineering
background that has made 'us' click, but the feeling I got as I drove over
that dusty track and she came into view 'on the beach' was quite fantastic. I
am even thinking of setting up my own site as a tribute!
Since we returned on Tuesday, my Wife and I
are already planning our next visit to Fuerteventura, maybe as soon as
September this year!
I have added a couple more of the better
photographs I took on this trip.
Regards
